Update: A guy at a Denver SEO meetup told me to stop chasing links and start fixing my site

His name was Mark. He said my backlink outreach was pointless because my site speed was over 4 seconds. Told me to fix that first, then ask for links. He was right. Has anyone else had a basic site issue kill their link building efforts?

Totally agree, and @stella_murray's bar example nails it, same thing happened with my slow product pages.

I mean, it's like trying to sell someone a drink from a bar with a broken front door. People won't even bother coming in if the basics are messed up. Mark had a point.
