Read a study that said lighter packs reduce injury risk by a ton, @jesse_fisher would probably disagree though.

Used to think a heavy pack meant I was prepared for anything. Then I got knee pain so bad I had to cut a trip short. Honestly, now I weigh every single item and leave the "just in case" stuff behind. My back and my hikes are way better for it.

But what if you get caught in a storm without that extra gear? I've seen people like @gavina73 get into real trouble by cutting weight too much. A few extra ounces of a good rain layer or a backup fire starter can turn a dangerous situation into just a bad night.
