Can we talk about map reading fails? Mine added hours to my hike.

I was on the John Muir Trail and missed a turn because the map was faded. Ended up bushwhacking through thick brush for two miles. When I finally found the trail again, I was so relieved I almost cried. Now I carry a waterproof map and a backup GPS.

That "almost cried" relief is why depending on one thing, maps or otherwise, always backfires.

Reinforces that shaky feeling of relief you get when your backup plan saves you. Sometimes you need that scare to really learn not to put all your eggs in one basket.

Yeah, that feeling hits way too close to home. Putting all your trust in just one tool, whether it's a map or an app, sets you up for a real bad time. Felt that panic last week when my phone died in an area with no street signs. Makes you realize how important a backup plan is, even a simple mental note of a turn or two. That shaky relief is a powerful lesson, isn't it? Ever have a close call like that with something else you depended on too much?
