PSA: Had to choose between saving the original RoboCop script or letting the 2014 remake destroy my memory of it

I picked watching the original again last night for the 8th time instead of giving that glossy remake another chance, and honestly I still can't believe someone thought Murphy needed a shiny new suit and a backstory about corporate meetings.

My buddy Dave tried to watch the remake first before ever seeing the original. Big mistake. He spent the whole movie texting me like "why is RoboCop a cyborg accountant now" and "is this a superhero origin story or a business seminar." I made him come over that weekend and we watched the original. About halfway through he literally paused it and goes "they ruined Murphy's whole vibe man." He still brings it up anytime someone mentions reboots. The remake made him appreciate the original even more just by being so bad at understanding what made it work.

Margaret, I actually thought the remake had some interesting ideas even if it didn't land as well. The satire about corporate drones and media control felt pretty relevant, just not as sharp as the original. But you're right that watching the remake first is a terrible way to discover the character.

Wait, hold on. Dave actually thought the remake RoboCop was a cyborg accountant? That is genuinely the funniest thing I have heard all week. I almost choked on my coffee imagining Murphy in a suit doing spreadsheets and talking about quarterly earnings. The remake really did miss the entire point of the character if someone walked away thinking he was a business major with a gun. How did that movie get the green light with a script that made a guy feel like he was watching a corporate training video?
