The Total Recall remake still makes me mad
I remember watching the original with my dad on a Friday night back in the 90s, that scene on Mars where his eyes bug out still sticks with me. So when they did the 2012 remake I thought okay maybe they'll update the effects and keep the weird vibe. Man was I wrong, they stripped out all the dark humor and made it a generic action flick with Colin Farrell just running around. Did anyone else feel like they completely missed what made the original fun or am I just holding onto old memories too tight?

Totally feel you on this. I actually watched the remake first as a teenager and thought it was fine, but then my buddy made me watch the original and I was like oh, this is how it's supposed to feel. The weirdness and dark jokes are what made it stick, not just explosions.

The original had that scene where the guy's head explodes from low pressure on Mars because of a bad seal on his suit, and I still laugh every time. The remake made everything so clean and serious, like they were embarrassed to be a sci-fi movie. I remember walking out of the theater thinking, "Did I just watch a Bourne movie with a space station?" My dad was so disappointed he fell asleep halfway through. I guess I hold onto that memory of watching him crack up at the eye-bugging scene too hard, but honestly, that's on the remake for being lifeless.
