My neighbor Gary mowed a perfect line 6 inches onto my side and I finally understood why
Gary and I have been doing the lawn standoff on Maple Street for two summers now. Last Saturday he fired up his mower at 7am and cut a dead straight line about 6 inches past the property stake, then waved at me like nothing happened. I used to think he was just sloppy, but standing there with my coffee I got it: he's not mowing my grass, he's claiming it. Now I'm weirdly looking forward to my turn on Sunday. Anyone else have a neighbor who does the slow territory creep with a lawn mower?
Did you ever have that moment where something clicks and you see a thing totally different? I always rolled my eyes at my neighbor Ed and his mower, figured he was just careless at the edges. Then last fall I watched him edge his driveway right up to my mailbox post, and it hit me. He wasn't being sloppy, he was drawing a border in his head. Now I catch myself lining up my cut along the same strip of grass, like we're both saying "this part's mine." Funny how a lawn mower can turn into a marker for who owns what.
