The night my neighbor's floodlight turned our block into a stadium
Last Tuesday my neighbor Sal installed a motion floodlight so bright it lit up my whole backyard at 2am when a raccoon walked by. It happened three times that night, and by the third time I was standing at my window watching my tomato plants get interrogated. I went over the next morning and he laughed, said he just wanted to see his grill at night. I get wanting to feel safe, but there has to be a middle ground between pitch black and a car dealership lot. Asking him to add a shield or drop it to 30 degrees, am I being reasonable here?
Did you know most of these lights have a sensitivity dial inside the box? I bet Sal never even looked at it, he just cranked everything to max and called it a day. The thing is, you can usually turn down the range so it only picks up stuff right near his deck instead of every critter wandering through your yard. So yeah, asking for a shield or a lower angle is totally fair, but you might also suggest he mess with those settings first since it's a five minute fix. That way he still gets his grill lit up and you get to sleep, which sounds like a win for both of you.
