Warning: My dad's 'ignore the barking dog' advice made things way worse
My new neighbor in the duplex has this little terrier that barks nonstop whenever they leave, like from 8 AM to 6 PM. My dad, who's lived in apartments forever, told me last month, 'Just ignore it, they'll get used to you and stop.' So I tried that for three weeks, figuring the dog would calm down. It didn't. It just kept going, and I started getting headaches from the noise while trying to work from home. I finally left a polite note, and the neighbor had no idea it was happening because they work long hours. They got a bark collar (the citronella kind, not a shock one) and now it's quiet most days. My dad's old-school 'mind your own business' rule totally backfired. Has anyone else had a simple neighbor problem that got worse because you waited too long to say something?

My old landlord had that same "don't make waves" mindset. Let a leaky faucet go for months because of it, ended up with a huge water stain on the ceiling below.
