Had to pick between fixing my old furnace or buying a new one last winter

My furnace died in January when it was like 15 degrees out. The repair guy said $900 to fix the blower motor or $4,200 for a whole new unit. I went with the fix because I didn't have the cash for a new one. It worked all winter but now it's making a weird noise again. Did I make a dumb choice or should I just keep patching it up?

At least you didn't finance a $4,200 furnace at 25% interest with one of those "no payments for 12 months" deals that catches people. With the $900 fix you bought yourself a year or two to save up cash and shop around for a good deal on a new one instead of panicking. That weird noise might just be something simple like a loose panel or a belt that needs tightening... old furnaces make all sorts of racket when the weather changes. Keep an eye on it and start putting $50 a week in a jar for the new one so you're ready when it finally gives up.

Heard a podcast say those "buy now pay later" deals trap people, what @laura189 said hits home.

Exactly what @laura189 said. I put away $40 a week for two years, handled my furnace replacement without any payment plan nonsense.
