Overheard a barista say pour-over is just fancy drip coffee and honestly I get it now

Was waiting for my order at a shop near downtown. Guy behind me called pour-over "pretentious drip." I laughed but then I thought about it. Tastes the same to me after the first sip. Why spend 5 minutes watching water drip through beans? My $2.50 regular drip at the gas station works fine. Anyone else think this trend is just a way to charge double for the same thing?

Drank pour-over once, tasted like my Mr. Coffee drip.

Did you try it with the same beans you use in your Mr. Coffee? Because honestly, that's probably where the issue was. I had the same problem at first - I made a pour-over with my normal grocery store medium roast and it tasted exactly like my drip machine. The thing that changed everything for me was using a lighter roast and actually grinding it a bit coarser than I thought I should. Also, I stopped worrying so much about the perfect pour pattern and just focused on getting the water temperature right. Once I dialed in those two things the flavor was completely different, way more clean and bright.

Yeah I feel you on that. "Tasted like my Mr. Coffee drip" is exactly how my first pour over went too. I was so disappointed cause everyone makes it sound like this life changing experience and I was just standing there like...this is just coffee. It took me a few tries and honestly watching some youtube videos before I got anything that actually tasted different. The beans make way more difference than I ever thought they would.
