Appreciation post: a client's thick, curly hair in Phoenix showed me a better way to use thinning shears

I tried a new technique with my thinning shears on a client's dense curls last week, holding them at a 45-degree angle and only taking from the mid-shaft, and the result was way more volume without losing the shape, so has anyone else found a specific angle that works best for different hair types?

Found that with super straight, fine hair you have to go almost flat against the head, like a 10-degree angle, and just skim the very ends. Any higher and it gets choppy and weak. For thicker wavy hair, that 45-degree angle you mentioned is perfect, it gives texture without making it look piecey. Really coarse hair can handle a steeper angle, closer to 90 degrees, in the mid-sections to remove bulk from the inside. It totally changes based on the density.

Totally makes sense, the angle is everything. My own hair is so fine that if I try any real technique it just vanishes, like I'm texturizing a ghost. Basically just point the shears at the floor and hope for the best over here. It's a miracle I have any left at all after my own bathroom experiments.
