Appreciation post: That one job where a bread clip saved a brake cable
Thinking about how we used to jury rig stuff in the shop before everything had a dedicated tool. Had a kid come in with a frayed brake cable end, and I was fresh out of end caps. Spotted a plastic bread clip on the counter and just crimped it on with pliers. It looked silly, but it worked fine for months until he upgraded. These days, I've got a whole drawer of proper cable ends in every color. Makes me laugh how we got creative with everyday junk back then. Sure, it wasn't perfect, but it kept bikes rolling in a pinch.

Ever think those hacks were just sloppy? Seeing stuff like this makes me get why they matter.

I read a forum post once where someone used a paperclip to fix a gear shift, and it made me see the value in these quick fixes. Like @tyler6 said, it might look sloppy, but when you're in a bind, it gets the job done. That kind of thinking kept a lot of bikes on the road before all the fancy tools came around.
