Rewatching The Wire after 10 years hits totally different now
Back in 2014 I blew through season 1 in a weekend and thought it was just a cop show with good acting. Last month I did the full 5 seasons in 3 weeks and holy crap, the layered storytelling is insane. The first time I was too young to catch how every system, from the docks to the schools, feeds on itself. My buddy who rewatches it every year kept saying "you missed half the plot" and he was right. Anyone else find a show shifts meaning that much on a second pass?
Rewatching it in 2024 hits way harder because we've lived through a decade of the same broken systems getting worse. The docks plot was boring to me at 22, now it's the most real part cause I know people who lost jobs to automation and shipping shifts. Also, noticing how every corrupt cop or politician starts out with good intentions just kills me now. You can't unsee that after you've seen your own city's officials do the exact same dance.
