Spent 3 weeks trying to get my wife into The Wire and the fix was turning on subtitles
My wife and I have a deal where we trade off picking our nightly show, and she kept dodging The Wire for almost 3 weeks straight. Every time I put it on she'd grab her phone within 10 minutes and start scrolling. I figured she just hated cop shows, so I gave up and we went back to cooking competitions. Then last Tuesday I was rewatching an old episode by myself with the captions on because our soundbar is going bad, and she sat down and watched 2 full episodes without looking at her phone once. Turns out she could not understand half the dialogue. All the street names, the slang, the mumbling, she was lost the whole time and too stubborn to say it. We are now 6 episodes into season 2 and she is the one asking to keep going. I felt like an idiot for not thinking of it sooner. Any other shows that are basically unwatchable without subtitles? I have a feeling this is going to change how we pick stuff from now on.

Same thing happened to me with Peaky Blinders, subtitles saved us.
