Trying to watch 'Dark' without subtitles was a mistake until episode 9

I kept losing track of the German dialog while reading subtitles and was about to give up after episode 4. Then I read a post saying to watch the first 8 episodes with subtitles but turn them off for episode 9 to really feel the twist. It worked way better than I expected and now I'm hooked halfway through season 2. Has anyone else tried watching a foreign show with a different approach like this?

But then you're missing half the acting performance without the original German.

That Christoph Waltz performance in Inglourious Basterds. You think his English version loses the menace? Or is it more about Tarantino writing the dialogue for both languages?
