Tried heat-treating in my shed with a hair dryer and a toaster oven, big mistake
I thought I could save $300 on a kiln by using a $25 toaster oven and a hair dryer from Goodwill in Spokane, and after 3 hours the blade came out looking like a melted candy bar, has anyone else tried a budget setup that just backfired?

A heat treat needs to hold a steady temp around 1500 degrees for a set time, and a toaster oven can't get anywhere near that without catching fire. The hair dryer was just adding hot spots, not helping. Next time, check a local maker space or community college for kiln access and save the $25 for good steel.
