Tried a free "PC cleaner" app on my mom's laptop and it ate 3 hours and a $79 repair bill
My mom's laptop was running slow so I grabbed one of those free tune up tools that promises to speed everything up. It deleted 14 registry keys it decided were junk and then the wifi driver quit working, so the machine couldn't get online at all. Geek Squad in Dayton charged $79 just to tell me what I already feared and reinstall the driver. What free tool has burned you worse than $79?
Fourteen registry keys gone and it killed the wifi? That is wild. Those cleaners love to flag anything with "driver" or "update" in the name and just wipe it without asking. My sister ran one of those on her old Dell and it broke her sound card, took two weeks to figure out what happened.
