Crown moulding blowout - cheap mitre saw let me down big time

I was fitting crown in a 12x14 bedroom in Cleveland and my old mitre saw was off by almost 2 degrees on a compound cut. The third corner had a gap you could stick a nickel through. Any tips for dialing in a budget saw without spending on a Festool?

TIL my new neighbor's pool pump runs 247 and I can hear it through my bedroom wall

I used to think loud music was the worst neighbor problem. But then the Smiths moved in last August and installed this above ground pool with a pump that sounds like a semi truck idling. It runs from 7am to 10pm every single day, even when nobody is swimming. I finally walked over last Tuesday and asked if they could at least shut it off after 8pm, but they just said "it needs to cycle for the chemicals" and closed the door. Has anyone else dealt with constant mechanical noise from a neighbor instead of just parties or barking dogs?

I was trying to train a simple image classifier for my side project, and the dataset was a total mess. Duplicates, wrong labels, blurry shots - the usual garbage. I spent three hours manually sorting through 2,000 photos and wanted to throw my laptop out the window. Then I tried using a basic clustering algorithm to group similar images together before cleaning. It took maybe 30 minutes to set up in Python, and it flagged 400 exact duplicates and 150 near-duplicates I never would have caught by eye. The model accuracy jumped from 62% to 81% after I removed the junk. Has anyone else tried this approach or found a faster way to prep datasets?

Just dropped $300 on a fancy level and it broke day one

I bought a digital level from a brand my buddy swore by for pipe alignments, and on my first job at a plant in Gary, the screen went blank after one drop off a 4 foot ladder. Turns out the plastic casing is garbage and the warranty doesn't cover impact damage, so I'm out the cash. Anyone else had a tool fail on the first use and just had to eat the cost?

It took 3 blown power supplies before I learned to check the outlet voltage first

I kept blaming the hardware when my client's PCs would just die after a few months. Finally I grabbed my multimeter and checked the wall outlet in their office off Elm Street. Dude was getting 145V coming through because the wiring in that old building is completely shot. I had swapped out three different PSUs on the same machine over six months before I figured it out. Now I always test the line before I even open my tool bag. Any other techs run into crazy voltage issues that made you look bad at first?

Told a guy at a gallery opening that AI art 'had no soul' and he hit me with a story I can't forget

I was at First Friday in downtown Austin last month, standing in front of a massive oil painting. Some guy next to me said his digital piece was generated in 12 seconds. I scoffed and said something about soulless machines. He just laughed and told me his wife has ALS and can't hold a brush anymore. She used an AI tool to sketch out a portrait of their daughter from memory. Then he asked me if that art had no soul either. I didn't have an answer. Had a day last week where every single cut went perfectly

I was trimming a big red oak in Brookline, Massachusetts, and everything just lined up. The rope slides were clean, my notch cuts landed exactly where I wanted them, and the hinge wood held right to the last second. Three big limbs down in under an hour, no wrestling or second tries. Has anyone else had a day like that where the tree just seems to cooperate?
