I thought my friend was nuts for buying a $120 board game about farming turnips.

After playing it twice, I'm now the one planning crop rotations and trying to trade sheep for a better plow, so has anyone else fallen hard for a game they thought looked totally boring at first?

Yeah, it's wild how a game's theme can be a total red herring. The mechanics underneath are what really hook you, even if you don't care about turnips or sheep at all. Now I'm looking at games about baking bread or laying tile and wondering what I've been missing.

Same here, @johnson.daniel has a point too though, bread games surprised me.

Theme actually helps me learn the mechanics faster though. A good one turns abstract rules into something I can picture. I'd be lost in a pure math game without that layer to hold onto.
