Kinda shocked me how many board games from the 90s are still being played today

I was looking up old games I played as a kid a few weeks back, and I found out that Settlers of Catan from 1995 has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. That blew my mind because I remember it just being this weird German game my uncle brought over. It's wild to think how much the hobby has grown since then, like now there's a whole aisle at Target for stuff that used to only be in specialty shops. Has anyone else noticed a game from your childhood that just exploded way bigger than you expected?

The "weird German game my uncle brought over" part got me because that's exactly how I remember Catan too, like it was this underground thing only certain people knew about. But honestly it makes sense if you think about how the internet changed everything. Back then you had to hear about a game from a friend or stumble on it at a weird store, now people find niche hobbies on YouTube and suddenly everyone is into them. Same thing happened with D&D, that was considered super nerdy when I was a kid and now my neighbor's kid has like three different campaigns going. I think social media just made it easier for people to realize they aren't the only one who likes this stuff.

Whoa wait, 40 million copies? I had no idea it was that many. That's like more than most video games sell, that's insane.
