My copy of Twilight Imperium just gave up the ghost during a 6 hour game

We were about to claim Mecatol Rex last Saturday when the plastic ring on the strategy card holder snapped clean off. It happened right as my friend went to grab his card, and the whole thing just fell apart. I had to tape it together with some clear packing tape from the kitchen drawer just to finish the round. Has anyone found a good way to fix these without making the cards stick?

I used to think those plastic rings were fine, but a six-hour game ending like that would change my mind.
