Question about teaching Splendor vs Ticket to Ride to total newbies

I tried both with my sister and her husband over Memorial Day and Splendor went way smoother since there's no map to explain and they got the gem chips right away. Ticket to Ride lost them at the route card scoring around turn 3. Has anyone else had better luck with one over the other for people who've never touched a modern board game?

Would starting them on the kids version of Ticket to Ride first help them get the route thing?
