Spent 2 years playing Catan wrong because nobody read the rule about the robber correctly
It took a friend visiting from out of town to point out that you can't just move the robber anywhere you want after a 7 is rolled, you actually have to move it to a specific hex and then steal from someone adjacent to that hex, so now I have to apologize to everyone I've ever played with, has anyone else discovered a rule they completely botched for years?

My group played Monopoly wrong for like 5 years. We thought you got $400 for landing on Free Parking from all the taxes and fines people paid into the middle. Turns out that's not a real rule, its just something people made up. I was the one who insisted on it every game because it made the game feel more exciting. But once I learned the actual rule I felt pretty dumb. I get why you'd feel bad about the Catan thing, at least you were trying to follow the rules close.

Honestly I don't get why people feel dumb about that Free Parking rule. Like who cares? The whole point is to have fun with your friends, not run a board game competition. If your group liked it that way then you weren't wrong, you were just playing your own version.

Oh wait actually the Free Parking rule is even wilder than that! The real official rules say you don't put any money in the middle at all, so if you do that house rule you're basically printing money and making games last forever. But honestly half the people I know still play with that rule anyway haha.
