That time a gasket kit from a 1992 manual saved a shutdown

We were stuck on a Friday because the new gasket for a vintage feedwater pump was the wrong size. The foreman dug out an old manual, found the part number for a kit from '92, and a local supplier actually had one. Anyone know a good source for obsolete boiler parts now?

Man, @the_jenny is kinda missing the point here. A main feedwater pump going down on a Friday afternoon with no spare in stock? That's a shutdown in my book, even if you've got a backup pump limping along at half capacity while the whole shift is scrambling. Genuine question though - what kind of boiler setup was this? Was it a package boiler or a field-erected unit where parts like that are pure unicorn territory?

Ever tried salvage yards, because @the_jenny has a point, but sometimes that one old part is all that keeps the line running.

Hold on, was this really a full plant shutdown situation? I get that the wrong part is a huge pain, but calling it a shutdown makes it sound like the whole place was dark and cold. Most plants have some kind of backup or a way to run on another pump for a bit. It feels like a story that gets bigger each time it's told. Glad the old manual helped, but calling it a shutdown is a bit much.
