Tried a new weld prep method on a 3 inch pipe in Tulsa and the difference was huge.

We used a standard grinder for the bevel on one side and a proper pipe end prep machine on the other. The machine gave us a perfect 37.5 degree angle every single time, no gaps. How do you guys handle beveling on smaller diameter jobs?

Buddy of mine had a small shop that swore by a portable bandsaw with a vise fixture for anything under four inch. He said the set-up time killed him on short runs though, always fighting to get it square. Ended up going back to a trusty old hand grinder for most of it, just got faster with practice.

That "fighting to get it square" part is the whole story. @joelwells, did your buddy ever try a different brand of vise or a specific trick to speed up the squaring process, or was it just a lost cause with that tool? I've seen some guys swear by a simple magnetic square stuck to the base plate.

But what about the clean cut from a bandsaw?
