PSA: Our club picked a 900 page book and half the group quit by chapter 4
We met at Dana's place in Portland on Thursday and only 4 of the 11 regulars showed up. The pick was a dense history brick that most of us could not get through, and two people straight up messaged the group chat saying they were done. I liked parts of it but I also skipped 200 pages in the middle, and I felt weird admitting that out loud. How do you all handle it when a book is too long, do you push through or just call it at the meeting?
Pick a page cap instead of a whole book next time. If the group agrees on something like 300 pages max, nobody has to feel bad about skipping chunks or tapping out early. Treat the meeting as a place to talk about what you did read, not a test on all 900 pages. Also split long books across two months, so people have room to breathe. Being honest about skipping 200 pages is fine, half the room probably did the same thing and stayed quiet. The real problem is the pick, not the people who quit.
