Vent: Our group spent 3 meetings arguing over whether the main character in 'Klara and the Sun' was actually sentient.
We got so stuck on defining consciousness that we barely discussed the plot. Has anyone else's book club derailed this hard over a single philosophical question?

I mean, is it that deep though? It's a book club, not a philosophy class. You could just agree to disagree and actually talk about the story.

Yeah, like milestaylor said, it's just a book club. But I see this everywhere now, people get so caught up in picking apart the idea of something they forget to just enjoy the thing itself.

It happens everywhere now, even picking a movie turns into a debate about ethics. We get stuck on the meta-question instead of just having the experience.
