Just realized I've cut over 2,000 sheets of book cloth by hand this year.

I was tallying up my project notes and that number hit me, making me wonder if anyone else has a favorite tool or trick for keeping those long cuts perfectly straight.

My old drafting teacher would lay a metal yardstick down and run a fresh utility blade along it, but he'd always put a strip of masking tape on the back first. The tape keeps the ruler from slipping on the cloth, which is the main reason my cuts used to wander. It sounds too simple, but that little bit of grip makes a huge difference over a long cut.

Oh man, that tape trick is legit. I used to get so mad trying to cut straight lines on poster board for menus and it would always slide. Started putting a few strips of duct tape on the back of my metal ruler, sticky side out, and it was like night and day. That little bit of grab stops the wiggle before the blade even touches down. Simple fixes are always the best.

Ever try that with double-sided tape?
