Overheard a kid at the library say my book looked like a sandwich

Binding a custom poetry book for a friend. Used marbled paper on the cover. This little girl points and says, "Mom, that book's a fancy sandwich." Her mom was so embarrassed. But honestly? Kind of a compliment. Made me think about how we see our work versus how others see it. Anyone else get a weird but funny comment on a project?

My cousin's three year old called my quilt a crunchy blanket. Kids see the texture first, not the purpose.

Actually, I've noticed kids often get the purpose right away too. They just use their own words for it.

Yeah that's so true. Kids just cut right to the heart of it. Like @margaret_taylor42 said, a "crunchy blanket" is way more honest than some fancy description. I'm the same way, I called my raincoat a "splash shirt" until I was way too old. Still kind of think that's a better name for it, honestly. We overcomplicate stuff trying to sound smart when the simple words work better.

Honestly I used to think kids just made up silly names for things. But you're right, they're actually nailing the function. My nephew calls bandaids "ouch stickers" and that's exactly what they are. It's like we unlearn how to describe stuff clearly as we get older. We add all these extra words that don't really mean anything.
