My grandma's 40 year old snake plant was labeled a weed at the nursery in Fresno
I always figured snake plants were just tough houseplants, but a botanist at the Fresno swap meet told me sansevieria got reclassified into the dracaena family back in 2017 and my grandma's plant is basically a cousin of dragon trees. Anyone else still calling theirs a sansevieria out of habit?
Yeah that reclassification thing threw me for a loop too when I first heard about it. Bought a little snake plant at a yard sale years back and the lady swore up and down it was a sansevieria, so that name stuck in my head forever. Then my kid comes home from some plant class talking about dracaena this and dracaena that and I'm sitting there like, what are you even saying. Sure enough, the whole genus got folded in back in 2017, so technically grandma's plant and a dragon tree share a family tree now. My tags still say sansevieria though and I'm not about to scratch them out over some paperwork change. Old habits die hard I guess.
