My neighbor's front yard went from dead grass to a full native plant garden in 8 months

It was just brown dirt and some weeds last fall. She got a free workshop from the city on water-wise plants and started with a few small pots. By spring, she'd planted maybe 20 different local flowers and grasses. Now it's all buzzing with bees and looks way better than any lawn. Has anyone else tried switching to native plants and seen a big change that fast?

My cousin tried a native plant garden last year in Phoenix. She spent over three hundred dollars on special soil and drip lines. Half the plants died in the summer heat anyway. It looks patchy and the homeowners association sent her a warning letter. Sometimes just keeping a regular lawn alive is hard enough.

Sounds like your cousin went about it all wrong. Native plants should handle the heat if you pick the right ones and don't baby them. Maybe the HOA just needs to see it fill in after another season.

Honestly, is there anything HOAs love more than sending letters about some patchy dirt?
