Spent 4 months fighting spider mites on my Monstera in Seattle and lost 5 leaves before I figured it out
I brought home a Thai Constellation from a nursery in Capitol Hill back in March and within two weeks the undersides of the leaves were covered in webbing and tiny specks, so I sprayed it with neem oil every 3 days for a month and they just kept coming back. Turns out I was only treating the top of the leaves and never wiped the stems or repotted it, so they were hiding in the soil and the leaf joints the entire time, and by the time I did a full soil swap plus a soapy water wipe down twice a week, I had already lost 5 leaves off a plant I paid $90 for. What's your go to method for mites because I still check that plant every morning like it owes me money?
This is the same thing that happens with every pest or problem in life honestly, people treat the thing they can see and ignore the thing they can't. Fleas on a dog, mold behind the caulk, ants in the wall, it's always the hidden part that gets you. Four months of neem on the top of the leaves is like mopping the floor while the pipe under the sink keeps leaking. My go to now is pretty simple, I pull the plant out, hose the roots off, dunk the whole thing in soapy water up to the rim of the pot, and toss the old soil completely. Then I wipe every stem and leaf joint with a soapy cloth twice a week for a month, no shortcuts. The morning check thing never really stops either, that plant owes both of us money now.
