Went back to the creek behind my grandpa's farm in Guthrie and the mayapples took over the whole bank
My grandpa used to drag me out there to fish when I was a kid, about 30 years back, and the whole bank was just fescue and dirt. I walked the same stretch last Saturday and counted mayapple colonies on maybe 40 feet of the bank that used to be mowed to nothing. There's also pawpaw sprouts under the hackberry that were never there before, and the watercress in the spring branch has gone crazy. I think it's because nobody has run cattle on that lot since the 90s, so the understory finally got a chance to come back. Makes me wonder what my grandpa would say. Any of you seen old pasture ground flip like that once the grazing stops? Trying to figure out if the mayapple moved in on its own or if something else pushed it.
