My buddy swore by that cheap $15 tool set from Harbor Freight for 2 years before I caved and bought one last month,
I finally borrowed his ratchet after my Craftsman broke on a rusty bolt and honestly the thing held up fine, has anyone else had a cheap tool surprise them like that?

Oh man, I used to be totally the opposite. I'd buy the cheapest socket set I could find and just hope for the best. But then my $15 ratchet wrench completely rounded off a bolt on my truck's brake caliper bracket and I was stuck for two hours with a dremel. That was the moment I realized you really do get what you pay for, @murray.spencer. I'll still grab a cheap hammer or pry bar but I learned the hard way to spend more on anything with moving parts.
