That fancy mortar mixer I swore was a waste of money

I remember when my buddy bought one of those electric mortar mixers back in 2018 and I laughed at him. I figured a good wheelbarrow and a hoe were all you needed. Then he let me borrow it for a foundation job over on Maple Street that had 40 bags to mix. I finished that whole pour in 2 hours by myself and my shoulders didn't ache for three days. Anybody else had a tool they mocked at first then ended up buying their own?

One of those mortar mixers showed up at my shed last spring after I swore up and down I'd never need one. My neighbor had it sitting in his garage for three years collecting dust, and now I don't know how I ever did a patio without it. The first time I used it I felt like a fool for all those years mixing by hand and getting mortar in my shoes. That thing paid for itself the first weekend, no question.

My neighbor let me borrow his mixer for a weekend last fall and I ended up using a shovel anyway because the thing kept jamming up every time I put a full bag of mix in it. I spent more time unclogging it than I would have just mixing by hand. Maybe his was just beat up from sitting in a garage for five years, but it didn't save me any time. For a small patio or a weekend job, I still think a wheelbarrow and a hoe get the job done. Not saying they're useless, but I wouldn't call it life changing either.
