My cheap rice cooker gave up the ghost mid-meal prep
It happened yesterday afternoon while I was making a big batch of beans and rice. The thing just clicked off and started smoking, filling my kitchen with a burnt plastic smell. I had to throw out the whole pot, which was about $8 worth of food. Ended up finishing the rice in a regular pot on the stove, which was a pain. Anyone have a recommendation for a budget cooker that won't try to burn my apartment down?

Ugh, the burnt plastic smell is the worst. My old cooker did the same thing, just died with a weird hiss. I got a basic Aroma model from Target for like $25 and it's been a tank for three years now. I use it at least twice a week for rice and sometimes steaming veggies. What's your usual budget for something like this?

Saw my buddy's cheap cooker start smoking last month. He tried to save a few bucks and it almost caught his counter on fire. Sometimes spending a little more upfront saves you a bigger headache later.

That burnt plastic smell is a bad sign. Might want to check your kitchen outlet, cheap cookers can fry when the wiring's old.
