Just realized my $40 hostel sleep mask was a total waste

I bought this fancy weighted sleep mask from REI for 40 bucks before a trip to Denver last month. Thought it would block out every ray of light and help me sleep on a 6 bed dorm room. First night it was so tight it gave me a headache and I tossed it across the room. Ended up just using a free eye mask from the airline that worked way better. The cheap one was thin and flimsy but it actually stayed on and didn't press into my eyeballs. Anyone else find that expensive gear for budget travel just doesn't pan out?

That 40 dollar sleep mask thing reminds me of how I bought an expensive portable charger once that died after three months, but a generic one from a gas station still works two years later. Seems like when you're traveling on a budget, the cheap stuff often works better because it's simpler and less gimmicky. More money usually just means more problems with travel gear, not better results.

Ha! So the gas station special outlasted the fancy one. Classic.
