Tried those 'secret' flight booking tricks from TikTok and got burned twice

I followed a viral video that said to book a multi-city flight through a random city like Dublin to save money. For my trip from Chicago to Denver, it quoted me $180 less than a direct flight. I booked it, but then realized the layover in Dublin was 14 hours and I had to pay for a hostel. Then on the way back, the second leg got canceled and the airline wouldn't rebook me because it was two separate tickets. I saved maybe $60 total and lost a full day of my vacation. Has anyone actually made one of those hacks work without getting screwed?

And yeah that's exactly what happened to me and what got me too, it's always the separate ticket thing that screws you. I saw a hack about booking through a travel portal for extra miles but then you're stuck with their customer service when something goes wrong. @iris574 probably knows the struggle, it's like these hacks are designed by people who never actually fly. My buddy tried the skiplagging thing and got banned from United for a year, so that's a whole other level of headache. You basically have to become an expert in airline contract law just to save a few bucks.

Oh man, my coworker tried that Dublin trick for a Denver trip too and ended up sleeping in the airport. She said the airline blamed her because it was booked as two separate tickets basically.
