Warning: that guy who bragged about $5 hostels in Bangkok cost me $200
Met this traveler at a bar in Chiang Mai who swore he found a hostel for $5 a night with free breakfast and AC. I followed his advice and ended up at a place with roaches and no hot water for 3 days before I bailed. Spent $50 on a proper hotel and another $150 on a doctor for the rash I caught. Anyone else run into these 'too good to be true' budget tips that blew up in your face?

Did your friend try the hammock camping spots in Costa Rica? My buddy got lured in by a guy online who said they were $8 a night with jungle guides... turned out the hammocks had ants and the guide was just some drunk local who charged him $40 for a terrible tour.

Wait, the guide was just some random drunk dude who charged you extra? That's wild, I can't believe people actually fall for that stuff.

Got tricked by a guy in Vietnam who said $3 street pho was the best in the world. Turned out it was a guy selling soup from a rusty cart and I spent the next 48 hours hugging a toilet in my $8 hostel. Worst part is he was so convincing I actually thanked him before I got sick.
