My last insurance company charged a $5 monthly fee, so that math checks out.

Wait, that $5 fee is usually just for paper billing though, right? I mean, they don't charge it if you go paperless. So the real math depends on if you're getting statements mailed to you. My old company did the same thing.

My old internet provider had that exact fee... it was $4.95 for paper bills. I went paperless right away, but like @violatorres said, you have to know to look for it. The setting was hidden in a totally different section from billing, under "account alerts". It took me forever to find it, and I only knew to search because a friend warned me. They absolutely make it hard on purpose, hoping you'll just pay the extra few bucks every month. It feels like a sneaky tax for people who don't have time to dig through poorly designed websites.

The real sneaky part is when the paperless option is buried in the website or app settings. @violatorres is right about the fee type, but companies bank on people not digging around to turn it off. I had to click through three menus to find the switch with my old provider. They make it free on paper but a pain in reality, so a lot of folks just eat the fee out of frustration. It's a quiet money maker because they know most won't complain. That setup feels way more dishonest than just being upfront about a charge.
