The envelope method actually worked for our grocery budget

My wife and I were going over budget by about $150 a month on groceries, no matter how careful we tried to be. Last month I decided to take $400 cash out of the bank on the 1st and put it in an envelope, and that was all we could spend. It forced us to plan meals around what was on sale and stop grabbing extras just because they looked good. By the 28th we still had $35 left, which was the first time in a year we didn't go over. Did anyone else find that using cash instead of cards makes a big difference?

$400 on groceries for two people seems like a lot to start with.

lol yeah $400 for two people does sound like a lot. it reminded me of that time I went grocery shopping with my roommate and we spent like $80 just on cheese and snacks because we both forgot we had a lot of stuff already at home. we ended up throwing half of it out a week later cause it went bad. now I try to meal plan better but honestly sometimes I just grab random stuff at the store and hope for the best.
