I always thought teaching was for their benefit, but it turns out I learn just as much.

Yeah that part about learning just as much hits home. I've found you really don't know a thing until you have to explain it clearly to someone else. It forces you to sort out your own messy thoughts. So true what @angelawright said, the teacher often gets the better end of the deal. You walk away seeing the whole topic in a new way.

Wait, seriously? You only realize how much you learn when you try to teach it? That's wild to me because explaining stuff to my little cousin always shows me what I actually don't know. Kinda funny that helping someone else ends up fixing your own confusion first.
