Rant: That $50 boning knife I thought was a steal from a flea market
I picked up this boning knife at a flea market in Portland last month for $50. Thought I was getting a great deal because the handle looked solid and the blade seemed sharp. Got it home and tried breaking down a pork shoulder with it. The blade started chipping after just two cuts. I mean, it was so bad I had to stop and use my old trusty Victorinox instead. I probably could have bought a decent new one for that price. Anyone else ever get burned by a used knife that looked good but turned out to be junk?

And THAT is EXACTLY why I NEVER trust flea market knives anymore. Unless you KNOW the maker or can test it before buying, it's a TOTAL gamble. That $50 could have gotten you a solid new Victorinox or Mercer. People sell cheap pot metal blanks with fake "nice" handles all the time. The blade chipping like that is a dead giveaway it wasn't even decent carbon steel. You got played, and I'm sorry that happened.

That's a rough lesson to learn the hard way.

Buddy of mine dropped forty bucks on a bayonet at a swap meet. First time he tried to camp carve with it, the tip snapped off clean.
