I finally found a garage sale toolkit that actually made sense

Last Saturday at a yard sale in Eugene, this retired mechanic was selling his whole setup for $60, and I grabbed a box of old feeler gauges and brake bleeders without thinking twice. Turns out the cheap plastic case had a handwritten inventory list inside, so I knew exactly what was missing before I handed over cash. Has anyone else gotten lucky with a stranger's old tool collection, or do you stick to buying new?

Sixty bucks for a box of someone else's half-used tools? I'd rather spend that on a single quality torque wrench from Harbor Freight with a warranty. Feeler gauges wear out after a few hundred uses anyway, and brake bleeders are cheap enough that buying them new removes the guesswork about whether some stranger's been using them on rusty lines for twenty years. The inventory list is neat, sure, but it just tells you what's broken or lost, and you still got stuck with the stuff that's left.
