Shoutout to that random bookstore in Portland I walked into last weekend

I was browsing Powell's City of Books on Saturday and noticed a whole section on self-publishing guides. I always thought those big publishing houses were the only way to go for a decent book. But the staff member there showed me a step-by-step plan that costs under $500 to get a paperback out. It totally changed my mind about going indie. Has anyone else switched from traditional to self-publishing after visiting a place like this?

$500 for the whole thing? That staff member must have skipped the part about a proper editor costing half that alone.

oh man, that's awesome you had a good experience at Powell's. but i gotta say, the "under $500" part is a bit optimistic. i mean, you can definitely get a basic paperback out for that, but things like professional editing, cover design, and proper formatting usually push it closer to $1k-$2k if you want it to look legit. maybe it's just me but i've seen too many books that skip those steps and end up looking super homemade.
