Lost a $2,800 cherry countertop job because I quoted from a photo and didn't drive out to see the sagging floor
Two weeks ago a lady from Ann Arbor called me about a cherry countertop for her kitchen island. She sent me three pictures on her phone, I looked them over, and I quoted her $2,800 over the phone like an idiot. I showed up with the slab cut and glued two days later, and the floor under that island sagged almost an inch and a half from the door to the sink wall. My level told me right away but I had already committed to the cut. I spent four hours shimming and scribing the underside just to get it to sit halfway decent, and she could still see a gap at the far end no matter what I did. She paid me for the material and told me not to come back. The lesson here is simple. Never quote a top from a picture. Ever. That $2,800 job cost me the material, the drive, and a referral from her sister who owns two rental places in Ypsilanti. Does anybody else have a hard rule about driving out to measure before you give a number, or do you all just eat the phone quote and hope for the best?
