Server room cable tangles were a huge pain. I learned to draw a map before starting. What's your trick?

Forget maps for a second. The real trick is to work from the back of the rack to the front. Most people start at the front and get stuck when they hit the mess in the back. By starting at the back, you untangle the source first, and everything else falls into place. It saves time and cuts down on pulling the wrong cable by mistake. You also get a clear view of how cables run before messing with critical connections.

Watched my buddy Mark try to redo his whole server room from the front like usual. He got totally stuck when he reached the back wall of cables, everything was tied together. Finally tried your method out of pure frustration, started at the very back. Took him half the time once he cleared that initial knot, and he didn't yank a single live connection by accident. He texted me after like he'd found some secret cheat code. Now he does it that way every single time.

Saw my coworker try that and it fixed his whole cable mess.
