Rant: Someone told me my tent stake setup was trash and they were right

Last summer at a site in Great Smoky Mountains, an older guy watched me hammer in those cheap aluminum stakes with a rock. He just said, 'You're gonna lose that tent at 2 AM.' I switched to 8-inch steel groundhogs and a rubber mallet after that. Has anyone else had a random stranger's advice totally change their gear game?

Man, that hit close to home. I had a buddy finally tell me my tent stakes were basically just tent suggestions after a windy night in the desert. Switched to MSR Blizzards and actually slept through the night for once.

Dude, yeah. Tent suggestions is the perfect way to put it. I had the same problem with the cheap ones that come with the tent, they just bend right over. Woke up with my tent wrapped around my face more than once... not fun. Switching to some solid groundhogs changed my whole view on camping honestly. It's wild what a difference a good stake makes.
