Looked up the exact number of times a celebrity was actually canceled and it was way lower than I thought

I found out that J.K. Rowling only lost about 5% of her book sales after all the trans comments in 2020, according to a Publishers Weekly report, so does the term 'canceled' even mean anything anymore or is it just a myth the internet keeps alive?

Yeah, that's a really good point. It sucks seeing people lose everything over old tweets.

Consider the people who actually got fired from jobs or lost whole careers over old tweets, that's real cancellation with real consequences. Rowling still has millions of fans and a huge platform, so calling her "canceled" just because some people yell at her online makes the term meaningless. If losing a few sales but keeping a massive book empire is cancellation, then what do we call someone who actually gets blacklisted from their entire industry?
