A mechanic in Tucson said to stop patching cracked bumpers with zip ties, and I finally listened
He quoted me $0 for the advice and said zip ties hold for maybe 3 months before the crack spreads to the mounting tabs. I switched to plastic welding with a $40 kit and the last 4 bumpers I fixed at my shop held up over a year. Has anyone here tried that mesh tape method instead?
Man, come on. A cracked bumper is a cracked bumper. Zip ties have held plenty of bumpers together for way longer than three months in my experience, especially if you drill the holes right and keep the ties tight. That "it spreads to the mounting tabs" line sounds like a scare tactic to get people paying for real repairs. Plastic welding is fine if you want to go that route, but acting like zip ties are some kind of death sentence for your bumper seems way overblown. Mesh tape and epoxy works too, and so does just leaving the crack alone if it's cosmetic.
